Testi dalle Università - Books from the Universities Inside the Creative Team: Exploring the Process of Creating Comic Books by Jeffrey A. Miller University of Buffalo, 1994 The $700 million American mainstream comic book industry caters to nearly two million readers in the United States. A growing inter-disciplinary interest in the comic book's cultural significance has produced a diverse body of research, but the context in which comic book creators, as mass communicators, work has remained unexplored. The main purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate how comic books are created.Conversations with twelve professionals active in the field revealed the typical comic book to be the product of a collaborative, sequentialcreative process. The industry's traditional division of labor results in a creative team comprised of five specialized roles: writer, penciller, letterer, inker and colorist. The fusion of all five team members' creative and technical skills - a synergy of talents - produces a combination of art and literature unique among the mass media. These findings challenge the notion that the contributions of letterers, inkers, and colorists are insignificant, and greater attention to these creators and their work is recommended. This study is based upon a series of interviews with the following comic book creators: writer Neil Gaiman, writer/artists Howard Chaykin and Todd McFarlane, pencillers Graham Nolan and Walter McDaniel, letters Tom Orzechowski and Kurt Hathaway, inker and former penciller Joe Sinnott, inker and editor Dick Giordano, colorists Marcus David and Steve Oliff, and editor, writer, and sometime artist Carl Potts.
