Il più colto e informato storico britannico dei comics... Praticamente un solitario, in un Paese che non ha mai veramente amato i fumetti, pur avendone prodotti alcuni fra i più importanti (Dan Dare, Jeff Hawke...). Ha squarciato il velo del mistero sui leggendari comics britannici degli anniVenti e Trenta, conosciuti bene anche da noi nell'Anteguerra perché pubblicati dalle edizioni Vecchi ("Jumbo", "Audace", ecc.), ma si è occupato in modo magistrale anche di quelli americani e internazionali. I suoi libri erano brillanti, approfonditi, e hanno un posto d'onore nelle nostre biblioteche.

Steve Whitaker of the GCD wrote: I regret to announce that Denis Gifford the British Comics Historian passed away last week (his obituary in The Independent for the 24th of May dates his passing as "circa the 18th"). He was 72. Dennis was a generous and enthusiastic man that I only knew briefly during my term on the committee of the SSI (Society of Strip Illustrators) in the late '80s. Whenever our paths crossed - which was ever more infrequently- he was as accessible as ever and was always glad to respond to a letter. I remember writing to ask if he knew of a book on British Syndicated Newspaper Strips and recieving a copy of his STAP ME! (the only book ever done on the subject. . . by Denis naturally) by return of post. I can't think of anyone who could fill his shoes when it comes to specialised knowledge of British comics and strips - especially from the pre-war period(s).
